Is 131-Iodine Radiation Therapy:

Time required:
< 20 minutes.

Purpose:
Treats Hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is the result of your thyroid gland producing too many thyroid hormones.

Preparation:
No special preparation is needed prior to the test.

Test Procedure:
Radioiodine will be given to you in capsule form and will be used to either control or to totally ablate your thyroid gland. The Radioiodine works by accumulating in your thyroid and decreases or eliminates its function so that it can no longer release excess hormones.

Post Treatment:
1. Drink plenty of fluids to help flush any extra radioiodine from your body.
2. Maximize your distance and duration of time spent from others (especially children and pregnant women) in order to reduce their
exposure to radiation.
3. Flush the toilet 2-3 times after using it.
4. No breast-feeding. Consult your doctor as to when you may resume breast-feeding.
