Bone
Scan
Time required:
Allow 15 to 20 minutes when you arrive to meet with the technologist
and receive your injection. After appropriate interval return
to the facility for your scan which can last up to 30 minutes.
Purpose:
To rule out the spreading of cancer into the bones. Indicate
Occult fracture undetected by xray, bone Infection-Osteomyelltis,
Vascular necrosis, Bone infarcts, and otherwise unexplained
bone pain and abnormal x-ray.
Preparation:
There are no eating or drinking restrictions, nor do you have
to stop any current medications.
Test
Procedure:
You will receive an injection of an isotope and will be asked
to return in 3 hours for your scan. During this time you will
be instructed to drink several glasses of fluid (preferably
water) and upon returning to the facility you will be asked
to empty your bladder before having the scan.
Your scan will take approximately 30 minutes. During the scan,
you will be asked to lie still on a table while the camera
takes pictures of your entire body.
